What they say
Devoted to words

"The International Writing Program's meaning has far exceeded literature. For decades, writers from around the world, especially the Third World, have broadened their horizons, which has led to greater artistic achievements in their works.

Although Hualing Nieh has retired, she remains the soul of the program. She is the very soul of this small city. A group of people has gathered around her, contributing money and whatever they can for literature.

I believe the best way to pay them back is to write well, even though they don't ask for any reward."

"I remember that for the 40th anniversary of the IWP, poet Xi Chuan and I brought a calligraphy work: Iowa of the Whole World people were applauding and shouting. It was really touching. The calligraphy not only represented the six mainland writers and all Chinese authors, it was a tribute to the IWP, to Hualing Nieh, to literature.

We often chatted to 2 or 3 in the morning in Nieh's Deer Garden. Her delicious food and good wine are unforgettable, so is her extraordinary enthusiasm. Her keen insights on literature shall benefit me for the rest of my life."

"Hualing Nieh's greatness comes from her extraordinary life and work Her sharp words, unique charm and unparalleled character make her mesmerizing. I saw a wonderful life that combines the cream of the East and West.

At Iowa, the happiest thing for me was taking a ride in Nieh's car - she got lost. The car dashed through the dusk of northern United States. The car embodied Nieh's character: bold, fearless and powerful. I wasn't nervous at all. On the contrary, I truly enjoyed it. While looking for a way, she told many stories, mostly about Paul Engle (her husband)."
