On three evenings in Beijing, opera goers can experience Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera "Don Giovanni," with some brand-new packaging from the Opera of Cologne at the National Center for the Performing Arts.
Based on the literary figure of the seducer of women, Don Juan, the current production presents the enduring themes of guilt, regret, love, and life's final curtain.
With a top-flight cast, the Opera of Cologne is presenting their newest creation of the legendary nobleman and womanizer, "Don Giovanni." On Monday afternoon, a sneak preview was offered to the press of a masterpiece both in musicality and plot.
Mozart's opera represented the breaking of any kind of boundary--especially erotic and social boundaries. But in keeping with 18th Century sensitivities, Don Giovanni's libertine way of life does not go unpunished.
Wu Jiatong, organizer of Wu's promotion, said, "gist: the music and topic makes this production a fitting choice."
The Opera of Cologne is currently undergoing a three year renovation, which makes possible their one month stay in China. Apart from their Beijing performance, the troupe will also head for Shanghai and Macao.
