Cultural exchange between Beijing and Taiwan artists
The Beijing-Taiwan Cultural Festival 2010 is underway in Beijing, featuring concerts, film screenings, forums, art exhibitions and theaters productions. The event has teamed up artists from across the Straits such as the Taipei Chinese Orchestra and the Ping Fong Acting Troupe from Taiwan, as well as painters and calligraphers.
Since it began in 2005, the annual festival has become a major event furthering interaction and collaboration between Beijing and Taiwan artists.
It also serves as a platform for Beijing to learn from Taiwan about the development of traditional arts, visual arts, film-making and publishing, as Beijing pushes to develop into a creativity industry center.
John Woo is searching for calligraphers
John Woo's latest movie, Reign of Assassins, has gathered together a number of A-listers, such as Michelle Yeoh and Barbie Hsu, but one mysterious cast member has yet to join up.
The kungfu thriller will have its Chinese title written in calligraphy by someone who is skilled and confident in the craft. Calligraphy lovers across the country and from South Korea have applied to take part in the competition.
Those who would like to take part can submit their works to the film's Sina Weibo microblog, the Chinese version of Twitter, before early August.
Rising actor Li Zonghan, who plays a kungfu monk in the film, has also entered the contest. He and lead actress Yeoh have a complex relationship in the film. The film will premiere around September.
