Recreating a masterpiece

Twelve veteran ink painters from across the Taiwan Straits will create a modern version of Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains, a masterpiece by famed Yuan Dynasty (1206-1368) painter Huang Gongwang (1269-1354).

The endeavor kicked off on June 27 in the hillside village Huang Gongwang in Fuyang, Zhejiang province where Huang created his work 600 years ago.

To be completed in four months, the new version of the painting will go on display in major cities in Taiwan and the mainland next year, organizers say.

The original painting, whose two parts are currently being separately housed on different sides of the Taiwan Straits, attracted instant widespread attention when Premier Wen Jiabao mentioned it at a press conference in mid-March.

The event was organized by the All China Business Federation, Fuyang People's government, and Hongmao Group, the developer of Octvillas in the Huang Gongwang village, an architectural project invited to the 2010 Venice Biennale in August.
