Peru president wins confidence vote
Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra scored a major victory for his government's anti-corruption policies on Wednesday, winning a vote of confidence in the opposition-held Congress as the country seeks to emerge from the shadow of Latin America's biggest graft scandal. Vizcarra won by 77 votes to 44 with three abstentions, Congress speaker Daniel Salaverry announced. "The course we have plotted continues. We continue working and putting Peru first, as always," Vizcarra said in a tweet after the vote. The government is now expected to begin negotiations with the opposition over introducing the anti-corruption reforms.

Killer nurse gets life for 85 hospital murders
A former nurse was convicted of killing 85 of his patients and sentenced to life imprisonment on Thursday for the worst killing spree in Germany's postwar history, multiple local media outlets reported. Niels Hoegel, who injected his patients with lethal drugs and then played the hero by appearing to struggle to revive them, had already been convicted and sentenced for two murders in 2015. The exhumation and autopsy of more than 130 bodies were necessary to build the case for the prosecution. Police suspect that Hoegel's final death toll may be more than 200.
