Domestic coffee plan is brewing

China Daily | Updated: 2012-02-29 11:08

Officials from Fushan, a township in Hainan's Chengmai county, say they will set up representative agencies in major Chinese cities to promote local coffee throughout the country and the world.

Fushan coffee has been designated as the official drink of the Chinese Contract Bridge Association's national bridge contest.

Fushan, which is located in the northwest of Hainan, became the first place to grow coffee in the region in 1933.

Most local coffee is mild-tasting, low-caffeine robusta. It has a strong aroma and is rich in selenium.

Fushan has 1,067 hectares of coffee trees that produce 2,000 tons of beans a year. A coffee culture city is under construction and will become a new tourist destination in the township.
