'YouTube Man' out to download gold

By Xinhua in Nairobi | China Daily | Updated: 2019-09-27 07:21

Self-taught javelin thrower Julius Yego shot to fame in 2015 when he defied the odds to become the first Kenyan to win a gold medal in a field event at the IAAF World Championships.

Dubbed 'YouTube Man', having honed his skills by watching tutorials on the video-sharing site, Yego's feat was one of the most endearing stories of the Beijing worlds and instantly propelled him into the global spotlight.

A silver medal followed at the Rio Olympics before Yego struggled through two injury-affected seasons. Now, buoyed by his gold at last month's African Games in Morocco, the 30-year-old is hopeful of reclaiming his world title in Doha.
