Players needed for esports industry amid boom

By Cheng Si | China Daily | Updated: 2019-08-03 07:19

Esports workers including gamers, managers and operational staff are still in short supply amid an industry boom, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security said in a report.

Shanghai-based advisory agency iResearch said in the report that revenue generated in the esports industry stood at over 94 billion yuan ($14 billion) in 2018, and it is projected to exceed 135 billion yuan in 2020.

A dearth of esports talent, however, was highlighted in the report to be the result of the industry boom and deficiency in talent development, as well as the stereotype that work related to esports is somehow not a respectable endeavor. This has hampered the development of the esports industry.
