China Daily | Updated: 2019-06-21 07:59

LAUSANNE, Switzerland - The International Olympic Committee on Wednesday announced that 100 female boxers will compete at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, up from 36 at Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

In accordance with recommendations made on May 22, the IOC decided to keep the boxing tournament in the Tokyo Games while suspending recognition of AIBA, the sport's world governing body for amateur fighters.

The IOC also revealed a revised quota distribution to enhance gender equality. While the overall quota of 286 boxers is maintained, the number of males will be cut to 186 from 250 in Rio.
