Fast sinking Jakarta may be submerged entirely by 2050, researchers predict

Worse than traffic and pollution, Jakarta has a more pressing urban problem: It is sinking.

The Indonesian megacity of 10 million people is said to be one of the fastest sinking cities in the world. According to a BBC report on April 29, some researchers are predicting large swaths of the city could be entirely submerged by 2050. Already, they say, North Jakarta has sunk 2.5 meters in the past 10 years.
