Head of legislature to run for top office

The head of Macao's legislature, Ho Iat-seng, announced on Thursday that he would run for the office of chief executive of the special administrative region. The election will be held in August. The term of Macao's current chief executive, Fernando Chui Sai-on, who was re-elected in 2014, ends on Dec 19. The Basic Law of the Macao SAR stipulates that the chief executive, an office with a five-year term, must be elected by a broadly representative 400-strong election committee and appointed by the central government.
