Study underway to assess diabetics

China on Sunday launched a five-year medical research study on blood pressure control for adults with Type 2 diabetes. The study aims at reducing cardiovascular problems and death risk. More than 200 research centers across the country will participate in the program. Researchers will randomly compare clinical trials of 12,000 Type 2 diabetes patients to find optimal blood pressure, said Ning Guang, a Chinese Academy of Engineering academician who initiated the research. China has 114 million adult diabetics, with more than half also with hypertension. Compared with those who have no elevated blood pressure, they have a higher risk of heart attack and stroke, as well as neurological complications.
