The joyful sailor pictured passionately kissing a woman in New York City's Times Square to celebrate the end of World War II has died at age 95, two days before his 96th birthday.

George Mendonsa had a seizure on Sunday at an assisted living facility in Middletown, Rhode Island, his daughter Sharon Molleur told The Providence Journal.

In the famous photo, Mendonsa was shown ecstatically kissing a woman in a white nurse's uniform on Aug 14, 1945, also known as V-J Day, when Japan surrendered and people flooded into the streets to celebrate the end of hostilities.
