At least 15 dead in mudslide at hotel
A landslide crashed into a hotel during a wedding celebration in southeastern Peru, killing at least 15 people, authorities said on Sunday. "The mudslide broke through the walls of the hotel, crashing through," said Evaristo Ramos, mayor of the city of Abancay. He said about 100 guests had been invited to the wedding party on Saturday and "there are 15 dead and 34 injured". Firefighters, police and residents worked through the night to rescue people still trapped under rubble, mud and rocks.

Army frees 38 people from Taliban prison
The Afghan army waged an operation and freed 38 people from a Taliban prison in the eastern province of Ghazni, authorities said on Monday. The Ministry of Defense said in a statement that nine militants were killed after Taliban and security forces clashed during the operation.

Painting stolen as witnesses watch
Police said a painting by a noted Russian landscape artist and valued at $182,000 was stolen from Moscow's Tretyakov Gallery, apparently in front of confused witnesses. The painting of mountain ridges by Arkhip Kuindzhi, titled Ai-Petri. Crimea, was reported missing from the museum of Russian art, on Sunday. Interior Ministry spokeswoman Irina Volk said gallery guards reported to police that unknown people took the painting off a wall and left.
