LA teachers head back to school after deal

By Liu Yinmeng in Los Angeles | China Daily | Updated: 2019-01-24 07:34

After more than a week of picketing and bargaining, teachers and staff from the second-largest school district in the United States were scheduled to return to classrooms on Wednesday.

Officials from the Los Angeles Unified School District and United Teachers Los Angeles announced on Tuesday that they had reached a tentative agreement that includes higher pay, smaller class sizes, more support staff and community-based schools.

"For a city that embraces the idea that public education matters, that children matter, that teachers matter, today is a day full of good news," LA Mayor Eric Garcetti said at a joint news conference with LAUSD Superintendent Austin Beutner and UTLA President Alex Caputo-Pearl.
