Japan considers strict data law for tech giants

By Wang Xu in Tokyo | China Daily | Updated: 2019-01-23 07:13

Japan is considering applying domestic privacy protection rules on foreign tech companies like Apple, Google and Facebook, Japanese media reported.

The country should consider a legal revision of laws that enables it to impose "secrecy of communications" rules on overseas-based information technology giants, a communications ministry panel said on Monday in a draft on issues concerning privacy protection.

The draft also called for studying ways to strengthen law enforcement by requiring foreign tech companies to have local agents in Japan.
