19 killed in recent protests, says govt

The government on Thursday announced that 19 people were killed in protests over the past week. "The total number of the people who died is 19, two of them belong to the regular forces," Sudan's information minister and government spokesman said. He explained that 187 members of the regular forces and 219 civilians were wounded. The Sudanese minister further accused foreign forces of politically exploiting the recent events, saying that the number of the people killed during the events had been exaggerated.

Marathon bomber appeals conviction

Lawyers for Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on Thursday asked an appellate court to overturn his conviction and death penalty sentence for helping carry out the 2013 attack, which killed three people and wounded more than 260 others. Lawyers for Tsarnaev argued in a brief filed with the First US Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston that a lower-court judge's refusal to move the case to another city deprived him of a fair trial.
