DUP fail to back May finance bill
The small Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party, which supports British Prime Minister Theresa May's government, failed to back her in several votes on a finance bill on Monday after being vocally critical of her draft Brexit deal. But the party's Brexit spokesman, member of parliament Sammy Wilson, told the BBC it did not consider the votes a breach of their confidence and supply agreement.

1 dead, 44 injured in train derailment
One person was killed and 44 others were injured after a passenger train derailed on Tuesday morning following a landslide in eastern Spain. According to officials, 131 people were affected by the accident, with one person killed and 41 slightly injured. Those injured are being treated by emergency medical services and some are being taken to hospitals in the area.

250,000 liters of oil spills into sea
A surveillance aircraft and six ships were dispatched on Monday to assess a spill of 250,000 liters of oil from a drilling platform off Canada's Atlantic coast, officials said. The spill occurred on Friday and "four oiled seabirds" were spotted and a wildlife rehabilitation team was called into action, Husky Energy said in a statement. All four offshore facilities in the area were shut down temporarily due to stormy weather in the area over the weekend.

WHO to lead fight against malaria
World Health Organization and partners are joining a new country-led response to scale up prevention, treatment and investment to protect vulnerable people from malaria, the WHO said on Monday. In its latest report, the WHO reveals a plateauing in numbers of people affected by malaria, from an estimated 217 million cases of malaria in 2016 to 219 million 2017.

Elevator falls 84 floors; no injuries
People rescued from a trapped elevator in one of Chicago's tallest skyscrapers later learned they had dropped 84 floors. Media reported on Monday that six people got into the elevator early on Friday on the 95th floor of the 875 building and one of several cables holding the elevator broke before the car fell rapidly, landing somewhere near the 11th floor. Firefighters broke through a wall more than 10 stories above ground to reach the people who were trapped inside.
