Work resumes at US military base
The central government resumed work at a disputed US military base relocation site on Thursday even though Okinawa residents see the project as an undemocratic imposition on the small southern island. Construction workers were setting up floats using a crane to mark the designated landfill area, making it off-limits to the public. Opponents gathered in paddle boats nearby, while Coast Guard patrol boats blocked them from reaching the site.

Nation braces for more bad weather
Italy on Wednesday braced for more bad weather after storms lashed the country, causing damage and claiming 12 lives in the past 48 hours. The national Civil Protection Department warned of fresh downpours, lightning storms, hail, strong winds and sea surges beginning on Wednesday night, and issued red and orange weather alerts for Thursday over a possible loss of life and damage to infrastructure in most of the country.
Peru
Fujimori held for money laundering
Keiko Fujimori, head of Peru's opposition Popular Force party, was arrested on Wednesday on charges of money laundering stemming from illegal campaign financing. Under a court order, she will be held in detention for 36 months as the investigation continues. She was previously arrested in early October and detained for 10 days because the authorities said she was a flight risk.
