Editor's note: This year marks the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening-up policy.

In October 2004, a China-made maglev train made its maiden journey in Dalian, Liaoning province, as seen in an item from China Daily. It was the first maglev train designed and produced in China.

Maglev - short for magnetic levitation - is a modern rail transportation technology that has been under research in China since the 1980s.
