'Coal heiress' scam exposed

Police in Chaoyang district have detained a 20-year-old woman accused of defrauding 17 men by posing as the daughter of a rich coal magnate. Ting Ting, who comes from Shanxi province, attracted her victims by sharing pictures of a luxury villa and car on WeChat before asking them to send large sums of money as gifts for her birthday and national holidays, according to the authorities. One victim from Shanghai said he was taken for 50,000 yuan ($7,220). Police said Ting's ID card was fake and the pictures she shared were downloaded from the internet. She was detained at a Beijing hotel after one victim called police.
