Editor's note: This year marks the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening-up policy.
An item from China Daily shows more than 200 runners from 20 countries participating in the 13th Beijing International Marathon on Oct 17, 1993.
First held in 1981, the marathon became an IAAF Gold Label race in 2008, attracting a growing number of runners from home and abroad.
