Mudslides after heavy rains kill 34
At least 34 people have died in mudslides triggered by torrential rains in a mountainous area of eastern Uganda that is prone to such disasters, a Red Cross official said on Friday. More victims are likely to be discovered when rescue reams access all the affected areas in the foothills of Mountain Elgon, said Red Cross spokeswoman Irene Nakasiita. People were killed by boulders and chunks of mud rolling down hills following a sustained period of heavy rains on Thursday afternoon in the district of Bududa, she said.
Russia
Putin-Trump summit 'possible'
Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump could meet in Paris on Nov 11 if both leaders take part in the same event to commemorate the end of World War I, RIA news agency cited the Russian Foreign Ministry as saying on Friday. Russia is open to dialogue and would be ready to consider times and locations of a possible meeting between the two leaders if Washington was also interested, the ministry said.

US Navy returns to Ashdod port
A US Navy warship has docked in the southern Israeli port of Ashdod, the first such visit there in almost 20 years, in what officials from both sides hailed as a sign of their strong ties in the face of shared adversaries. Foreign navies generally prefer northern Haifa as their Israeli port of call, so the arrival of destroyer USS Ross at Ashdod potentially signaled Washington's interest in broadened berthing options for its Mediterranean Sixth Fleet. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife toured the ship, shaking hands with officers and sailors, and then took part in a ceremony onboard.

Scientists make fastest camera
Scientists have developed the world's fastest camera, capable of capturing 10 trillion frames per second, making it possible to see phenomena in extremely slow motion, like freezing time. The study published on Thursday in the journal Light: Science& Applications showed that the new system based on a femtosecond streak camera incorporated a data acquisition type used in applications such as tomography. "We knew that by using only a femtosecond streak camera, the image quality would be limited," said Wang Lihong, professor of medial engineering and electrical engineering at Caltech.
