China's ivory ban dampens demand

New research by the World Wildlife Fund and TRAFFIC shows that China's ban on the elephant ivory trade has had positive effects since coming into effect in late 2017, but still needs further action. Research conducted in collaboration with GlobeScan, an independent consulting firm, showed that just 14 percent of consumers still intend to buy ivory products, while support for the ban has reached 90 percent. In 2018, new ivory-related ads across websites and social media are down by 26.6 percent and 10.6 percent respectively, compared to the second half of 2017. Margaret Kinnaird, a leader responsible for the wildlife sector at WWF, said that they are seeing some positive trends in the wake of China's ivory ban, but further efforts are still needed, such as means of stronger enforcement.
