Editor's note: This year marks the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening-up policy.
On Sept 13, 1990, the Huizhou 21-1 oilfield, one of the first offshore fields developed in the South China Sea, officially started production.
Since then, China has been speeding up the expansion of its drilling rigs for offshore oil exploration.
