At least 17 killed in plane crash

At least 17 people died in South Sudan on Sunday when a small aircraft carrying passengers from Juba International Airport to the city of Yirol crashed, State information Minister Taban Abel said. "The plane crashed and killed 17 people and we have three survivors," Abel told Reuters by phone from Yirol. The plane carried a total of 22 people and two were still missing. The plane crashed by a river and an eyewitness had earlier said bodies were recovered from the water.

Storm to become 'major hurricane'

Forecasters expect Tropical Storm Florence to become a "major hurricane" on Monday as it continues to approach the southeastern United States. And another storm, Tropical Storm Isaac, could also become a hurricane by Monday as it gains strength, forecasters with the National Hurricane Center in Miami said in an advisory early on Sunday. Florence is expected to travel between Bermuda and the Bahamas on Tuesday and Wednesday before approaching the southeastern US coast on Thursday.

First swine fever case in 26 years

The country's agriculture ministry said on Sunday it had confirmed the country's first outbreak of swine fever in 26 years and suspended exports of pork and wild boar meat. The fever, a different kind from the African swine fever that has broken out in China, was found in a farm in central Japan's Gifu city, the ministry said. Swine fever occurs among pigs and wild boar, and is not infectious to humans, the ministry said.

Egypt

75 people given death sentences

An Egyptian court on Saturday sentenced 75 former members of Muslim Brotherhood to death over their involvement in the armed sit-in in Rabaa five years ago, official Middle East News Agency reported. The case dates back to 2013 when supporters of the ousted Islamist President Mohamed Morsi gathered in Rabaa el Adawiya Square in Cairo's Nasr City district following his overthrow by the army in response to mass protests against his one-year rule.
