Stored on Shen Ali's phone are countless photographs of his grandfather during his time working and living in Algeria in the 1980s. The pictures were what inspired Shen to follow in his footsteps.
The anesthesiologist from Xiaogan, Hubei province, became the third generation of his family to travel to North Africa as part of a medical aid team when he arrived on a two-year mission in 2015.
Since his grandfather's visit almost four decades ago, Shen's uncle has been to Algeria five times as a chef for Chinese medics since 1987.
