Sea turns red as islanders slaughter whales
Images showing dozens of villagers hunting down and slaughtering a pod of whales in the Faroe Islands, coloring the water red with blood, have stirred huge online debate. This practice is known locally as the Grindadrap, and dates back to 1584. Originally the slaughter provided food for the harsh winter months, with the meat served salted or cut into steaks and the blubber sliced up and eaten raw. The whale meat still provides nutrition for the 50,000 islanders. While locals have been carrying out the hunts for centuries, the gruesome images will likely shock many outsiders.
