New warning issued to Ankara

US President Donald Trump on Thursday lashed out at Turkey, saying Washington will pay "nothing" to Ankara for the release of a detained pastor, as relations between the two countries took a further turn for the worse. Earlier in the day, US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin warned Turkey to expect more economic sanctions unless it hands over pastor Andrew Brunson. The dispute over Brunson and other frictions between Washington and Ankara have been one reason the Turkish lira has plunged 40 percent this year.

Official: Military parade put on ice

A military parade ordered by US President Donald Trump for later this year has been postponed until at least 2019, an official said on Thursday, following reports the cost had soared to more than $90 million. It was seen as a setback for the president, who had ordered the show of air power after being impressed by France's Bastille Day parade last year. The idea had been popular among many US citizens but drew scorn from critics, who said it would be a waste of money.

Japan

Inflated numbers of disabled employees

Several ministries may have inflated their numbers of disabled employees for more than four decades, Japanese media said on Friday, while companies that miss quotas set by law face fines. Japan, reeling from data-tampering scandals at companies ranging from Kobe Steel to Nissan Motor that prompted government inquiries, has asked all government ministries and agencies to recheck their employment numbers. Since 1976, both the public and private sectors have been told to employ a certain percentage of the disabled, as part of efforts to provide them employment.

India

More than 100 dead in Kerala floods

The death toll from rain-related incidents in the southern Indian state of Kerala has reached more than 100, with as many as 40 deaths being reported in the past 24 hours, officials said on Friday. This is Kerala's worst monsoon in almost a century. Apart from casualties, more than 200,000 people have been displaced, and more than 10,000 km of roads and hundreds of homes have been destroyed or damaged.

Australia

Teen shocks FBI after hacking Apple

A teenager has pleaded guilty to hacking into the main computer network of technology giant Apple Inc, downloading big internal files and accessing customer accounts, because he was a fan of the company, local media reported. The boy, 16, from Melbourne, broke into the US company's mainframe from his suburban home many times over a year, The Age newspaper reported, citing statements by the teenager's lawyer in court.

Germany

One in 3 Germans play video games

Nearly 30 million Germans aged 14 and older play video and computer games at least occasionally, said a study on Thursday. Since 2014, the number of gamers has remained at a constant high level and numerous digital offers like e-sport events and live streams make gaming a social event.
