38 held over oil smuggling

Customs authorities in Jiangsu province said a major network involved in smuggling more than 100,000 metric tons of fuel has been broken up. Nanjing customs reported on Monday that the network, involving two groups, had been operating since 2017. They owned five ships and smuggled refined oil from overseas, selling it in the domestic market. Customs officers raided the groups on July 6, detaining 38 suspects and confiscating more than 2,000 metric tons of smuggled oil at the site. Initial investigations showed that the groups had smuggled more than 100,000 tons of refined oil valued at 650 million yuan ($94 million).
