Not taking care of the kids: The moral collapse of US society

By David Blair | China Daily | Updated: 2018-07-23 07:13

Last week, I finally got around to reading Robert Putnam's 2016 book Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis, which has been on my reading list for some time.

It is a powerful view of the lives of teenagers of different social classes in towns across the United States that raises deep questions about what has happened to the country's culture and society in the past 70 years. I'm sorry I waited so long to read it.

Putnam, a professor of political science at Harvard, compares American society today with what he saw growing up in the small town of Port Clinton, Ohio, in the 1950s.
