Project to create broccoli types

A broccoli varieties research project has been launched in East China's Zhejiang province, aiming to break the monopoly held by foreign seed producers. Experts said that for a long time, more than 90 percent of Chinese broccoli seeds have been imported, at high cost. The project plans to cultivate five or more new varieties in more than 53,333 hectares over five years.

Court encourages local innovation
The Nanchang Intellectual Property Court was set up on July 5. It's the province's first specialized court for IP cases and one of 16 Chinese IP courts. The court will cover first hearings of civil and administrative cases on areas including patents, technical secrets and new varieties of plants in Jiangxi. The court's founding is an important measure to serve and guarantee Jiangxi's innovative development, the court's representatives said.

Cultural heritage shown in Prague
An event displaying and demonstrating Central China's Hubei province's intangible cultural heritage started on July 2 in Prague, capital of the Czech Republic, attracting more than 150 spectators. The attendees watched cultural inheritors demonstrate 14 intangible techniques, including Han Embroidery. The event helps Czech people to learn about the unique charms of Hubei's ancient culture and deepens mutual understanding between the Chinese and Czech peoples, said Wang Yanling, head of Hubei's publicity department.

Island sees filings, awareness rise
The tropical island province saw a significant rise in patent filings and newly granted patents in the first five months of this year. In the period, 1,346 patents were authorized, a year-on-year increase of 90.65 percent. The year-on-year rise of design patent authorizations reached 122.14 percent. The local intellectual property authorities said Hainan has organized many publicity activities related to patent application, authorization, protection and financing services to promote the values of respecting IP, and supporting innovation and entrepreneurship.

China's first big data center for trademark brands opened in Shenzhen, South China's Guangdong province on July 5. The center provides comprehensive, 24-hour monitoring and alert services for brands from home and abroad, with the help of leading network technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data and cloud computing, according to the center's creators.

Trademarks help combat poverty
Southwest China's Sichuan province released a guideline to create the Sichuan poverty alleviation public welfare collective trademark. It plans to register the trademark by the end of this year. Products produced in poverty-stricken counties or made from raw materials in those areas can use the trademark. The provincial government will provide financial, tax, transportation and personnel training support to businesses that sell products with the trademark, said an official at the province's poverty alleviation and immigration bureau.
