Leung Ping-chung was born in Hong Kong in the 1940s, and his father was a leading traditional Chinese medicine specialist.
"I have been interested in the study of biology since I was a young boy in middle school," he said. "When we were dissecting animals and plants, I was always much quicker and more accurate than my classmates, so my teacher encouraged me to 'become a surgeon'."
After high school, he entered the University of Hong Kong's school of medicine.
As manufacturing took off in Hong Kong in the latter half of the 20th century, industrial accidents rose. Consequently, medical workers had to deal with more cases of damaged or severed fingers. Leung was the first doctor in Hong Kong to successfully carry out a toe-to-hand transplant.
First visit
Leung's grandfather was originally from Shunde, Guangdong province.
In 1972, the Chinese embassy in the UK organized a tour of the Chinese mainland for a group of Chinese medical students, including Leung, studying overseas. "At the time, we were all really concerned about the country's development, so we quickly signed up," he said.
Memories of his arrival are fresh. "I still remember meeting a 'barefoot doctor' in rural Northwest China. He had previously been to medical school. I was impressed to learn how rural health workers used the limited resources available to dedicate themselves to serving their patients in the countryside."
Valuable memories
He participated in a US charity program that went to various hospitals to help. Leung compared the experience to being "parachuted in". He immediately saw the need to enhance patient rehabilitation and consequently started his own charit, Operation Concern.
"At one hospital we saw 500 or 600 patients during the 10 days we were there. The operating rooms were in constant use and the visiting doctors, from Operation Concern, performed operations on all those who needed them," said Leung, adding that they often worked until 3 am or later.
"We tried to educate the local doctors while we worked, so that they could take over from us once we had left. We scoured local factories for suitable materials to make medical devices, because although we had brought some with us, the local doctors would need more in the future."
Contributions
Leung and other medical workers from Hong Kong have seen 25,000 patients in remote areas and completed 4,500 operations over the past 25 years. They have also treated more than 600 orphans and ensured the children had a healthy lifestyle.
