The acknowledgment section in academic papers is where authors thank others for their contributions.

However, this section is often overlooked by both readers and reviewers alike.

Surprises and laughter can be in store for the unsuspecting reader. Here are a few quirky examples:

Thanking celebrities

Hu Jianghua, a second-year student at a medical school in Zhejiang province, wrote she "especially wishes to thank (pop star) Lin Junjie, whose songs have given me powerful spiritual support over the past decade" in the acknowledgment section of her paper published on Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity.

Hu said she added the singer's name on the paper without letting her supervisor know first. After finding the alteration, the supervisor said he is totally behind Hu finding her own inspiration.

Marriage proposal

Rui Long, from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology, wrote in his paper's acknowledgment: "In addition, Rui Long wants to thank, in particular, the patience, care and support from Panpan Mao over the past years. Will you marry me? "

Placing blame

Written by Brendan Pietsch, assistant professor of religious studies at Nazarbayev University in Astana, Kazakhstan.

"I blame all of you. Writing this book has been an exercise in sustained suffering. The casual reader may, perhaps, exempt themselves from excessive guilt, but for those of you who have played the larger role in prolonging my agonies with your encouragement and support, well ... you know who you are, and you owe me.

US evolutionary biologist Leigh Van Valen, wrote, "I thank the National Science Foundation for regularly rejecting my (honest) grant applications for work on real organisms, thus forcing me into theoretical work."

"If the book is not a success, I dedicate it to the burglars in Boulder, Colorado, who broke into our house and stole a television, two typewriters, my wife Helen's engagement ring and several pieces of cheese, somewhere about a third of the way through chapter 8."

Authorship rankings

In some scientific disciplines, authorship rankings are meant to reflect the amount of work that went into the project. But sometimes scientists resort to less-traditional means.

"Order of authorship was determined from a 25-game croquet series held at Imperial College Field station during the summer of 1973."

Thanking nature

"We acknowledge snowpocalypse 2010 for making the long-awaited completion of this paper possible."
