THE SALUTE THAT MADE A BOY A STAR

By Cao Yin in Mianyang, Sichuan | China Daily | Updated: 2018-05-10 07:47

At the age of 3, Lang Zheng became an icon of the earthquake in Beichuan county, Sichuan province, when he saluted the soldiers who rescued him from the rubble.

Now, at 1.73 meters tall, almost the same height as his father, Lang is a grade-one middle school student.

The 13-year-old can't remember the moment the quake hit and buried him under the rubble, but he knows he was rescued the following day. All his memories of the disaster come from his parents, along with a press photographer's photos of him saluting the army squad.
