Report tracks capital's trademark applications
A total of 264,853 trademarks were registered in the capital in 2017, together with 320,933 trademark applications, according to a report released by the Beijing Administration for Industry and Commerce on Tuesday. The top five sectors among the registered trademarks were advertisement sales, electronic apparatus, education and entertainment, skill services, and communication services, contributing 39.74 percent of the city's new trademarks in 2017. The administration set up service windows in five districts in the city for companies to register and collateralize trademarks as well as to take part in related consultations.

Children learn shadow puppetry art form
The province's cultural department hosted an event at a local kindergarten recently where intangible cultural heritage inheritors demonstrated a number of items, including Chinese shadow puppetry, to the children, as well as teaching them some of the art forms' techniques. "Intangible cultural heritage is a vague concept for the kids and so the on-site display and interactions made them realize the heritage can be seen and touched," said Cui Mei, head of the kindergarten, adding that the event helped the children learn about heritage protection.

Just-launched customs app 1st of kind in China
Xiamen recently released an intellectual property customs protection mobile app, the first of its kind nationwide. Foreign trade companies can now carry out consultations, searches and infringement reports via the app. It will allow cargo to be cleared by customs faster while avoiding infringement risks, related authorities said.

Office opened for handicraft protection
A traditional handicraft office of the Central Academy of Fine Arts was recently established in the county-level city of Chongzhou - the first of its kind in the province. The office will specialize in two intangible cultural heritage items - Daoming bamboo weaving and Huaiyuan rattan weaving. It will also aim to improve other traditional handicrafts in Chengdu, such as Sichuan embroidery and lacquer art, in the hope that they can provide a greater impetus for economic development.

Geographical indication event held in Urumqi
The region's industrial and commercial authorities hosted a trademark law publicity event in Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region on April 26 - World Intellectual Property Day. The event focused on how geographical indication trademarks can help in poverty alleviation. The authorities provided consultation desks, gave out publicity materials and visited companies to publicize trademark-related laws and policies and to discuss developing trademark brands.

Cultural heritage institute founded
The province's first intangible cultural heritage institute was recently founded in Lanzhou Vocational Technical College. Major studies can be undertaken in thangka, traditional Tibetan Buddhist painting, cultural relic repair and paper cutting among others. The institute will act as an important training center for related inheritors in Gansu, representatives from the college said. The institute will also offer modern apprenticeships and lectures as well as establishing an intangible cultural heritage database group.

Regulations to support local ethnic groups
The provincial capital Kunming will implement a new regulation for intangible cultural heritage protection on July 1 to give priority and support in areas mainly inhabited by ethnic groups. More than 1.27 million people in the city are of an ethnicity other than Han. The regulation says cultural and educational administrations should support higher learning institutions and vocational schools to offer related majors or classes for the training of intangible cultural heritage professionals.
