Parliament fails to elect new PM

Armenia's National Assembly on Tuesday did not succeed in electing a new prime minister. The only candidate, the opposition leader and head of Civil Contract Party, Nikol Pashinyan, got 45 votes with 56 against his candidacy. He had to get at least 53 votes in the 105-seat parliament. A new vote was scheduled for next week. The vote came after previous prime minister Serzh Sargsyan stepped down on April 23 amid mass protests over constitutional reforms.

United Kingdom

Man killed in London shootings

A man died and another was seriously wounded on Tuesday night in shootings in northwestern London, local news reports said early on Wednesday. He died at the scene about an hour after police and medical workers arrived at Cumberland Road, where the shootings took place. The injured man, in his 20s, was sent to a hospital in northern London. He remained in a stable condition, Sky News said. Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

United Nations

Report: 54 claims in three months

The United Nations said on Tuesday it received 54 allegations of sexual abuse and exploitation against peacekeepers and civilian staff and groups implementing programs in the first three months of 2018, including one involving an 11-year-old girl. UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq told reporters that 14 allegations involved peacekeeping operations, 18 involved UN agencies, funds and programs, and 21 were related to UN partner organizations. He said the allegations involved 66 victims, including 13 girls under age 18.

Kangaroo attacks fuel warning calls

Attacks by kangaroos in Australia's New South Wales have fueled calls for more warnings about feeding or approaching the animals, local media reported on Wednesday. The marsupials on the grounds of Morisset Hospital in the Lake Macquarie area draw thousands of visitors a week but tourists have been injured trying to feed the animals. Politician Greg Piper has called for authorities to put up warning signs.
