Lottery mix-up leads to suicide bid

A man, surnamed Liu, who splashed out on an lavish dinner for friends in the belief he'd landed a lottery jackpot of 5 million yuan ($781,250) had to be talked down from the ledge of his building when he discovered he'd won just 500 yuan. Liu, 28, paid a deposit of more than 8,000 yuan to organize a banquet immediately after seeing the lottery results on his local TV station. When he double-checked his ticket the next day, he discovered his mistake and decided to kill himself by jumping from his building. Police and firefighters talked Liu down after his girlfriend called emergency services.
