Hainan

Ferry service back to normal

Haikou ended its emergency response to passenger and freight transportation services from local ports on Monday morning, as the number of vehicles lining up to be ferried across the Qiongzhou Strait to Guangdong province dwindled to a normal level, according to a statement from the local government. In the past week, a total of 138,902 vehicles and 713,820 passengers had been ferried to Guangdong, the only access for cars to drive in and out of Hainan Island. Heavy fog had intermittently disrupted ferry services across the strait since last Monday, stranding thousands of cars and holiday visitors on the island. At one point on Tuesday, 20,000 vehicles were backed up 20 kilometers.
