Academy releases top science innovation picks

The Chinese Academy of Sciences recently unveiled the list of its top 12 scientific innovation and top six commercialization projects for 2017. The projects included the delivery of the manned submersible Shenhai Yongshi, the maiden flight of the world's first drone with a ton-level capacity, the detection of pulsars with the FAST radio telescope and a smart parcel sorting system. The companies with investment from the CAS earned total revenue of more than 400 billion yuan ($61.1 billion) last year.

Protection guidelines issued for pilot areas

The National Development and Reform Commission and three other government departments have issued a guideline to promote intellectual property rights protection systems in eight national comprehensive pilot areas for reform and innovation. The guideline called for shortened patent examination period, improved IP protection efficiency, optimized case investigation procedures and stricter punishment for bad-faith and repeated rights violations.

Counterfeiters caught in fake candy racket

Nanchang police and quality supervision enforcement officials recently raided a group manufacturing counterfeit Alpenliebe candy. They found five production lines at the hideout, along with 628 boxes of finished and semi-finished products and 52 boxes of fake packaging. The owner of the operation has been arrested and the case is under further investigation.

Qingdao trademark advice center opens

A trademark guidance center was founded in Qingdao last week, aiming to help local companies to increase their market competence. As part of the city government's trademark strategy, the center will serve as a platform for legal consultation, training, trademark evaluation and exhibition. It will also help the government and companies to establish a trademark rights protection system.

Police probes online literature fraud case

Hefei police announced they have investigated the city's first online literature copyright infringement case. A group of 11 people rented servers in Hefei and Shanghai to build 11 illegal websites in the past four years, providing more than 1 million novels which were copied from more than 30 licensed websites. The group had made 7.5 million yuan ($1.1 million) in revenue from advertisement since last July.

Alibaba takes No 1 spot on application list

Global e-commerce giant Alibaba Group filed 762 patent applications in Taiwan province last year, ranking No 1 among the top 10 applicants from outside the island, according to a report by Taiwan's intellectual property authority. It was the first time that Alibaba made the list, followed by Qualcomm and Applied Materials. Another Chinese mainland company - smartphone manufacturer Oppo - also made the top 10 list with 323 applications, increasing nearly six-fold from the previous year.
