Lanterns light up in time for Spring Festival
A lantern exhibition is being held in the city of Handan from Jan 30 to March 4, as an activity to welcome the Spring Festival. More than 100 delicately-designed lanterns are on display at the show, representing five schools of the handicraft across the nation. Most of the exhibits are works from top contemporary masters. The lantern-making technique was listed as a national-level intangible cultural heritage item in 2006.

Lawsuits in the capital double in five years
Courts in Beijing concluded more than 125,000 intellectual property rights-related lawsuits over the past five years, accounting for about one-fifth of the national total, said Yang Wanming, head of the Beijing Higher People's Court, in a recent work report. Among them, 36,800 cases were concluded last year, doubling the figure from 2013. Yang added that the courts are imposing increased penalties on IP rights violators.

Record filings lodged in province for 2017
Companies and individuals in Hunan filed 110,234 patent applications last year, increasing 15.6 percent from 2016, surpassing the 100,000 benchmark for the first time, according to latest statistics from the provincial intellectual property office. Among those applications, 51,569 were for inventions, exceeding 50,000 for the first time. Currently there are 6.87 invention patents for each 10,000 Hunan residents on average, increasing fivefold from five years ago.

Measures unveiled for stricter regulation
The government of provincial capital Changsha recently unveiled 12 new measures to promote quick, strict and coordinated intellectual property protection. According to the measures, one-stop IP service centers will be founded with staff from multiple agencies to accept all IP-related issues. A specialized IP enforcement team will be established to handle administrative enforcement operations involving patent, trademark and copyright disputes.

Police seize fake toys in pre-holiday crackdown
Dongguan police recently investigated a case involving counterfeit toys. They seized a suspect at a hideout and more than 4,000 counterfeit toys labeled as Lego and Hasbro, with potential value of 195,840 yuan ($30,919.22), but found many products had been transferred elsewhere. The operation was part of a special anti-counterfeiting campaign ahead of the Spring Festival, organized by the city government. The case is under further investigation.

Trio of cities to start management reforms
Three cities in the province - Shenyang, Dalian and Yingkou - which are involved in a free trade zone, will begin comprehensive intellectual property management system reform this year. In Shenyang, the provincial capital, local IP authorities will establish a one-stop service model for fast patent examination, recognition and protection to improve efficiency and reduce cost. The review period for trademarks, copyright and new plant varieties will also be shortened.
