Largest container ship delivered in Nantong
China's largest domestically designed cargo container ship was recently delivered in Nantong. The Cosco Shipping Aries, capable of carrying 20,000 twenty-foot equivalent units, is 400 meters long and 58.6 m wide, with its deck larger than four standard soccer fields combined. It features state-of-the-art safety and fuel efficiency. It has joined the fleet of China Cosco Shipping Corp, responsible for the route from the Far East to northwestern Europe.

Stricter measures to be implemented
The Tianjin intellectual property office will implement 21 measures this year, according to the city government's guidelines for stricter patent protection unveiled earlier last year. The measures will highlight enhanced law enforcement, specialized campaigns, an optimized market environment, improved services and coordination mechanisms. The Tianjin-based North China Intellectual Property Operation Center will continue to attract investors and operators outside Tianjin to help companies' patent protection and strategy.

Wuhan police raid auto part counterfeiters
One of the largest counterfeit auto part cases in recent years has been uncovered by police in Wuhan. More than 100 officers raided two hideouts on Jan 16 and seized 17 suspects. The police found the group was run by a family who had used social media to accept orders and sold products to clients across the country. Their total illegal income last year was estimated to exceed 10 million yuan ($1.5 million).

Rise in civil intellectual property lawsuits
Courts in the province presided over 56,300 civil intellectual property lawsuits in 2017, increasing 84.7 percent year-on-year and accounting for about one-fourth of the national total, according to the Guangdong Higher People's Court. Statistics over the past three years also indicate higher compensation paid to the rights owners. The compensation increased 21 percent on average for disputes involving invention patents during the period, and 36 percent for those involving utility patents.

Tencent, Google sign licensing agreement
Shenzhen-based tech giant Tencent announced last week that it has signed a long-term patent cross-licensing agreement with Google, covering a broad range of products and technologies. Both companies are open to future deeper collaboration on innovative technologies, according to the agreement. Google's patent head Mike Lee said that by working together, the tech companies can focus on building better products and services for their users.

New records set for trademark applications
China's trademark applications exceeded 5.7 million in 2017, up 55.7 percent year-on-year, both setting record highs, according to the State Administration for Industry and Commerce. At the end of last year, China had 14.92 million qualified registered trademarks, the most of any country worldwide. China is also the third largest applicant for trademark registrations in the international trademark alliance Madrid System, with 4,810 applications in 2017, up 59.6 percent year-on-year.

Illegal websites closed in online crackdown
Chinese authorities shut down 2,554 websites during Operation Jianwang 2017, an annual campaign against online piracy that started in July last year. They examined 63,000 websites, removed 710,000 links to pirated content and confiscated more than 2.7 million pirated publications. Law enforcement nationwide investigated 543 cases involving online copyright infringement, including 67 criminal cases that involved a potential market value of 107 million yuan ($16.3 million).
