China-made automated subway line sets off
The Yanfang Line, the first fully domestically developed driverless subway line, began trial operations on Dec 30. The trains have reached GoA4 standard, meaning that they can achieve unattended operation, with starting and stopping, the operation of doors and the handling of emergencies being fully automated without the need for on-train staff. Located in Beijing's southwest suburbs, the Yanfang Line has nine stations on its 14.4-kilometer main line. The line is expected to carry 70,000 passengers daily.

Officials to discuss patent achievements
A meeting is scheduled to be held on Thursday and Friday for the chiefs of local intellectual property offices nationwide. Shen Changyu, commissioner of the State Intellectual Property Office, will review China's achievements in the patent sector last year and announce the focuses for the new year. The local officials will exchange their experience in patent protection and management.

Yantai center first of its kind across the country
The China Yantai Intellectual Property Protection Center started its patent preliminary examination service on Dec 30, becoming one of the nation's first such protection centers to start operation. The Yantai center is China's first city-level IP protection center to be unveiled by the State Intellectual Property Office. Focusing on the modern food industry, it will combine the functions of patent examination, protection, mediation and law enforcement, aiming to reduce the cost and improve the efficiency of rights protection.

Liuzhou home to new type of pilot zone
The Liuzhou high-tech zone has been recognized as one of the latest group of eight national pilot zones for intellectual property, the first zone in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region to win the title. The area is home to 279 national-level high-tech companies and three national-level IP demonstration companies. Local companies applied for 1,565 patents in 2016, increasing from 684 in 2012.

Campaign tackles counterfeit trademarks
Trademark authorities nationwide investigated 45,400 cases involving counterfeit trademarks in the first 10 months last year, according to a meeting for trademark enforcement in Huangshi. The State Administration for Industry and Commerce initiated a special campaign against trademark rights violation in September and authorities in 26 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions had reported more than 2,000 leads by the end of November.

Guidelines outline improved regulation
The city's intellectual property authority and the administration of the Chongqing pilot free trade zone recently unveiled guidelines to improve IP regulation in the zone. The guidelines set up targets for the near future, including efficient IP management and enforcement systems, a convenient public service system, development of a professional IP service industry, diverse IP dispute solutions and strengthened domestic and international exchanges.
