Police arrest 177 in major fraud case

Police in 10 provincial regions have arrested 177 people suspected of telecom and online fraud, the Ministry of Public Security said on Tuesday. The amount of money involved exceeded 10 million yuan ($1.52 million), according to the ministry. Bank cards, cellphones, SIM cards and computers were confiscated. Police in Jiangxi province investigating a telecom fraud in July discovered gangs illegally obtaining citizen's information from the internet and extorting victims. The public should be alert to fraud and call the police immediately if they receive threats of extortion, the ministry said.
