Society: Former poster girl for charity to lead youth league

Su Mingjuan, 34, the former poster girl for the Project Hope educational charity, was recently elected deputy secretary of the Communist Youth League Committee in Anhui province. In 1991, photographer Xie Hailong from China Youth Daily in Beijing took a picture of her at age 8 in a shabby classroom in Anhui's poverty-stricken Jinzhai county. The photograph was later used as a poster for Project Hope.
