Item from Dec 1, 1986, in China Daily: The new National Library - China's largest, with a total floor space of 140,000 square meters - is scheduled for completion in Beijing next year.

Built in 1987, the National Library of China has a collection of more than 35 million items, making it the largest in Asia.

In September 2008, a new digital library was opened to the public on the site of the old one, which extended the existing library by 77,000 square meters to accommodate about 12,000 visitors every day.
