System launches Chinese version
The International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants has launched the Chinese version of its Plant Variety Data Routing Information System using multilingual application forms. The move follows the online platform's initial launch in January. Annual applications to register new plant varieties with the Ministry of Agriculture stood at nearly 3,000 in 2016, ranking No 2 among the inter-governmental union's members and enabling the country's total to exceed 20,000.

Agency service norms formulated
The Patent Agency Service Norms, a set of national standards formulated by the State Intellectual Property Office, the All-China Patent Attorneys Association, the Jiangsu province IP Office and a local IP research center, will take effect next year. The new norms will address thorny issues among patent agency service providers and help to improve their services, SIPO officials said.

Matchmaking event held in Shijiazhuang
During a business matchmaking event focusing on patented technologies held last week in Shijiazhuang, capital of Hebei province, experts from 20 higher learning institutes in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei explored potential cooperation options with more than 400 companies. Organizers publicized online more than 20,000 patented technologies developed by the universities and colleges in the region, seeking partners.

Pharma summit to cover new policies
The second China Pharma IP Summit will be held in the municipality on Dec 7. IP rights protection in the sector has been attracting growing attention from industry insiders after the China Food and Drug Administration released new policies earlier this year to encourage innovation. The two-day event will discuss such topics as patent term restoration and drug test data protection. It will introduce the latest changes on related patent examination and lawsuit procedures in the United States and some European countries.

Cultural industries to boom by 2020
The cultural industry and related sectors are projected to generate more than 170 billion yuan ($26 billion) in annual industrial added value by 2020 in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province. That's according to an action plan to promote the integrated development of the city's cultural creativity and design services with related businesses in 2016-20. The city government will support the research and commercialization of technologies in sectors that are related to the cultural industry. They include big data, cloud-computing, virtual reality and the internet of things.
