I stood, barefoot, clutching a computer atop which wobbled passports and keys, staring up at the smoke belching from a 17th-floor apartment in our building.

The fire was soon extinguished.

All the people gazing skyward at the window with mouths agape moments before now determinedly squinted at the building's door.
