Officer catches leaper unaided

A Chengdu traffic police officer saved a 75-year-old man who attempted suicide by jumping off a viaduct in the city's Wuhou district on Nov 12. Gong Xiancheng rushed to the spot below the senior citizen after he saw him climbing over the structure's protective wall, and tried to ask him not to jump. When the elderly man ignored him and jumped, Gong caught him in his arms. The leaper, whose children had moved away for work, said he wanted to end his life as his wife had left home to travel and he was ill.
