Li Yonghong, 50, mother of Liu Shunli, a 24-year-old with Down syndrome.
When Shunli was born, the doctor expressed concern that he might be intellectually disabled. At first glance, I could see he was different from the other babies. It was a huge blow to our family, especially Shunli's father, but we refused to give up on our son.
Compared with other children, Shunli was slower in learning to walk and speak. So we sent him to a care center for children with mental disabilities when he was age 3.
